Zanzigap is run by a group of teachers and ex-teachers in Sheffield, who have a vast experience both of this part of the world, and organising long-term visits by students within the framework of educational partnerships. Zanzigap is a unique partnership between educationalists in both locations. The Director is John Errington, a former Trustee of the Yorkshire & Humber Global Schools Association and a Director of UKOWLA (The UK One World Linking Association). In 2004, he was awarded an MBE for ‘services to International Citizenship, and North-South Linking’.
In Zanzibar, placements are expertly handled by the Ministry of Education, under the superb direction of the Minister himself, Hon. Haroun Sulieman MP. Zanzigap volunteers are greatly valued in Zanzibari schools and loved ones left behind at home need have no worries.
This vastly experienced Sheffield based company, is offering a profound and possibly life-changing experience; and while Colobus monkeys in Jozani forest, swimming with wild dolphins, snorkelling on the coral reef, breathtaking sunsets and glorious beaches are part and parcel of the total experience, there is much, much more on offer here. Zanzigap certainly offers something more essential and elementary, and ultimately fulfilling, rewarding and gratifying. Zanzigap volunteers are billeted in rural African villages on the tropical, coralline island of Zanzibar, in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania, East Africa. A genuine integration into village life is assured, and participants follow an easy, well-oiled programme of teaching English to teenage African students in the village school.
Experience has shown that a great mutual benefit accrues when English-speaking students are given placements in Zanzibari schools. English continues as the teaching medium in Tanzania; native speakers are greatly valued, and your presence will make a great difference. The positive improvement in students’ learning certainly impacts upon the school, but it is also an amazing and empowering experience for Zanzigap volunteers.
Zanzibar consists of 2 beautiful and fascinating islands, both steeped in history, strategically placed on ancient trading routes. It is a melting pot of culture, race and tradition. Swahili people are naturally hospitable. It is a very safe place in which to live. The Zanzigap programme is very exclusive and there are only sixty placements available. Early application is recommended.
