Or if you simply want to equip yourself with the culinary know-how to set yourself up as a competent cook for the future, Flora’s Kitchen provides a fun and imaginative environment in which students are taught to cook with confidence and passion.

You will learn cookery skills, knife skills, how to work to a budget, cleaning and time management so you can maximize your time on the important things in life! You will take away a folder full of menu plans, recipes and all sorts of hacks and tips about how to run a kitchen and even advice on how to be a helpful host.

We will also offer you recruitment guidance and Duke of Edinburgh Gold award students can even use this week as their “Residential”.

University Basics Cookery Course

typical day What will a typical day by like

What to expect during a "typical" day

A breakfast of pastries, cereals and fresh fruit with opportunities throughout the week to learn to make smoothies, pancakes, granola and eggs.

You will cook all morning and then create a delicious lunch which you will sit around the big oak table to eat and enjoy.

After which students take a well-earned rest and are able to make the most of Flora's home.

It's back to the kitchen at 4.15 pm to prepare supper which is also enjoyed around the family table.

After clearing up the time is yours to do as you wish but often includes time in the games room or playing cards, other games, quizzes.

Sample menu:

Breakfast: Pancakes and fresh fruit

Baking: Banana chocolate chip cake

Lunch: Roast chicken and gravy, roast potatoes, roasted peppers and cherry tomatoes, sautéed green beans, steamed broccoli

Supper: Oven-baked salmon, puy lentils with chorizo and honey glazed tenderstem and carrots

Pudding: Simple pear tarts

The Uni Basics course is perfect for those who want to learn how to make great tasting home-cooked food from healthy ingredients. Working in Flora’s stunning kitchen, classes are kept to a maximum of six (great for a group of mates), so you cannot fail to learn and soon you will have the confidence to roll out some sensational stalwarts.

Better still, you will learn to cook good wholesome food while being mindful of a student budget, making this course ideal for those going to university or preparing to live away from home. For instance, you may cook a succulent roast chicken with perfectly crispy skin. And from the remnants of this humble chicken, shall come chicken pie with billowing puff pastry, or Asian salad, chicken noodle soup, barbeque wraps, or Thai chicken curry, risotto…… the possibilities for leftovers are endless and invaluable.

During your stay, a nutritionist will give a talk as an introduction to food and what our bodies need, choices we can make and the benefits of a balanced and varied diet. We will also cover all manner of topics during the week: budget, shopping, health, hygiene, bacteria, bugs, food poisoning and sell-by dates. Also menu planning, seasonal ingredients and food alternatives.

Once the cooking is over, there is plenty of time to make use of everything on offer at Flora's home; games room, garden, tennis court, swimming pool, bicycles and the surrounding countryside.
