typical day What's it like

A typical day on this gap year project

A typical day when group leading involves meeting the children at breakfast time, checking they are all kitted out and leading them on all the day's activities until around 9pm, when the Night Duty staff take over. Group leaders are responsible for good communication with the group (and the teachers!) in break times and between activities, making sure they are happy and know where they need to be.

The children have a really busy time at Robinwood with fifteen activities packed into the three days, including Canoeing, Archery, Climbing, Trapeze and themed problem-solving sessions (including the famous Piranha Pool!) As a Group Leader, you will run all the activities they do during their stay. This means that over three days you can really get to know the children, build great relationships and make a really positive difference in their development.

Who would be a suitable participant?

We welcome applications from positive, enthusiastic people who have some experience (paid or voluntary) working with children. Qualifications in outdoor activities are not necessary as we provide all training, although some personal experience of our activities is useful. If you can relate to 8-11 year-olds from a wide variety of backgrounds and tell a great story, you could be the person for us!

You’ll be required to work 5-day weeks for your first 8 working weeks, but after that, you have the option to drop to a 3-day or 4-day week if that would suit you better.

6. Great Holidays - Group Leaders enjoy at least 12 weeks off each year, but still receive a year-round wage. As our centres only operate during term time, you would have the vast majority of school holiday time off.

7. Fair Pay - All of our new starters will receive £10.00 (10.40 at Barhaugh Hall) per hour from 1st April 2022. We don’t pay any lower rates, either to younger staff or through apprenticeship schemes.

8. Bonus Payments - We award bonuses each season for centre staff based on customer feedback. We also award an annual profit bonus for every single member of staff company-wide!

9. Fun! - A whole host of activities and social events take place throughout the year for you to join in on. Each centre has a team dedicated to choosing and organizing these for everyone to enjoy.
