Asia Gap Year Travel Tips from the Road
There's something about arriving in Asia with a backpack and a half-formed plan that feels like the unofficial start of every great gap year. Maybe it's the tuk-tuks weaving through traffic, the smell of street food at 9am, or the fact that you can stay in a beach bungalow for less than your last takeaway pizza in the UK. Either way, Asia has this wild, beautiful chaos that hooks you in and keeps surprising you.
I've backpacked across a good chunk of it, and every time I thought I had it figured out, something wonderfully bizarre happened. Like being invited to a wedding in Laos by someone I'd just met at a noodle stand, or playing pool with monks in Cambodia who were definitely better than they let on.
So if you're planning a gap year in Asia, here are the places that stole my heart and the tips I wish someone had told me before I jumped on that first night bus.
Thailand: The Classic Starting Point
Let's be honest, Thailand is gap year royalty. It's affordable, gorgeous, friendly, and delicious. You'll meet other travellers, eat something unidentifiable on a stick, and probably end up with at least one dodgy tattoo idea. If you are travelling to Asia, you might as well go to Thailand.
Bangkok is wild, busy, and overwhelming at first. Give it two days, and you'll either love it or make a run for the islands. The south has beaches for every vibe, party in Koh Phi Phi, chill in Koh Lanta, or find your budget yogi-self in Koh Phangan once the Full Moon crowd clears out.
Don't skip the north though. Chiang Mai has jungle treks, elephant sanctuaries (the ethical kind, please), and some of the best food in the country. And Pai, well, you'll either stay for two nights or two months. It is one of those marmite places where there is no in-between.
Tip: Take night trains instead of flights. You save money, get a bed, and it is a bit like being in a slow moving hotel that serves cup noodles.
Vietnam: Chaos, Coffee, and the World's Best Banh Mi
Vietnam is like a caffeine rush that never really wears off. From the motorbike traffic in Hanoi to the lantern lit streets of Hoi An, everything moves fast and loud, but in a way that's kind of addictive.
The north is dramatic and green, Sapa, Ha Giang, and the limestone peaks of Ha Long Bay are all postcard material. Central Vietnam has beaches, old towns, and a chill vibe that gives your overstimulated brain a break. And in the south, Ho Chi Minh City (still often called Saigon) is all noise and energy.
I rented a scooter and rode from Hue to Hoi An, which was simultaneously the most beautiful and most terrifying experience of my life. The views were ridiculous. The potholes were worse. I'd still do it again in a heartbeat. Make sure you have one of those basic rain covers because sooner or later it will rain like the end of the world for ten minutes.
Tip: Learn how to cross the street in Hanoi. You just walk slowly and steadily. The scooters will go around you. Hopefully.
Cambodia: Temples, Tragedy, and Unexpected Warmth
Most people come to Cambodia for Angkor Wat, which is absolutely worth the 4:30am wake-up call. Watching the sun rise over ancient ruins while monkeys steal snacks from tourists is strangely moving.
But Cambodia is more than temples. The country has a difficult history, visiting the Killing Fields and S21 prison in Phnom Penh is tough but important to remember the horrors that this country went through. The resilience of the people, though, is what really stays with you.
Down south, there are laid-back beaches like Otres and Kep, where the days blur together in the best way. I spent a week on Koh Rong and lost track of time entirely. Might still have sand in my backpack from that part of the trip.
Tip: Don't rely too much on ATMs. Some eat cards, others randomly shut down. Always carry a bit of backup cash in USD.
Laos: Slow Boats and Slower Days
Laos might be the chillest country in Asia. The vibe is more river hammock than rooftop bar, and honestly, that's exactly what you'll need after Vietnam.
Take the slow boat from Thailand to Luang Prabang. Yes, it's two full days on a wooden bench, but it is oddly meditative. Plus, you'll meet a random collection of travellers who will likely become your new group for the next leg of your journey.
Luang Prabang itself is all golden temples, quiet cafes, and a night market that sells everything from banana pancakes to questionable jewellery. Further south, tubing in Vang Vieng used to be wild, but these days it is more about nature and caving than beer buckets. Mostly.
Tip: Laos has a strict midnight curfew. Plan your evenings accordingly, or expect to be locked out of your hostel. Yes, it happened to me.
Indonesia: Beyond Bali
Bali gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. It's beautiful, easy to navigate, and has excellent smoothie bowls. But there's so much more to Indonesia if you're willing to hop around.
I fell in love with the Gili Islands, no cars, just bikes, snorkelling, and sea turtles who always seem just a bit smug about their lifestyle. Lombok is underrated but becoming more popular, with amazing surf and far fewer crowds. Java has incredible volcano treks, and Sumatra is one of the few places where you can still see orangutans in the wild.
Each island feels like a different country. And each ferry ride will test your faith in humanity, seat cushions, and sea-worthiness.
Tip: Don't just follow the Instagram trail. Ask locals where they go. That's how I ended up at a secret waterfall with two goats and no tourists.
Bonus Destinations: If You've Got Time
Sri Lanka: Surf, safari, and seriously good tea.
The Philippines: Over 7,000 islands. Choose wisely.
Nepal: Trekking paradise, with epic scenery and dhal bat for days.
Japan: More expensive, but worth every yen for the culture shock and the food.
Travel Tips from the Road
- Pack light, then ditch more. You won't wear half of it. I ended up rotating the same three outfits and one nice shirt for months. No regrets.
- Get travel insurance. Yes, even if you think you're invincible. I've seen too many people limp through border crossings with mysterious injuries and no cover
- Learn a few words. Even just hello, thank you, and "no chilli please" can go a long way
- Slow down. You don't have to tick off every country. Sometimes the best memories happen when you stop planning and just stay put for a while
- Be flexible. Transport will be late, weather will change, and at least one bus journey will involve livestock. Go with it. That's part of the fun
A gap year in Asia isn't just a trip, it's a rite of passage. You'll eat amazing food, meet people who feel like old friends after one night, and have at least one spiritual moment in a hammock. It'll be chaotic, hilarious, sometimes frustrating, and absolutely unforgettable. And when you're back home months later, bored at a bus stop in the rain, you'll find a train ticket from Laos in your coat pocket and smile like a fool.
