What is TEFL and what is TEFL Certification and is it widely recognised?

TEFL is an acronym that stands for Teaching English as a foreign language. A TEFL Certification is the qualification needed in order to teach English abroad. There are hundreds of TEFL courses to choose from but they don’t all hold the same weight so do your research carefully. A recognized TEFL course should meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 120 hour ON-SITE
• Have at least 6 hours of teaching practice with real students while being observed by experienced teacher trainers
• Have highly qualified trainers
• Give continued job guidance worldwide

Can applicants teach English abroad without any previous teaching experience?

If one has an Accredited TEFL Certificate then you can teach English abroad. Previous teaching experience is not required. Employers want to see that you have earned a TEFL certificate from a reputable TEFL training center because then they know you will have had observed teaching practice on the course.

What are the advantages of having a TEFL Certification when teaching English abroad?

Any reputable language school employer will want their teachers to have a TEFL Certificate. Even if you did get lucky and found a job that didn’t require a TEFL certificate, you’d have a very hard time delivering an effective English lesson to your students without the appropriate training. Just because you can speak the language doesn’t mean you can teach it. You will feel a lot more prepared and confident when you have a TEFL certificate.
